I started beekeeping about 12 (almost 13) years ago. Never in my wildest dreams did I plan on building a business out of it!⁠
⁠
I had just had my second son, and after watching a wild swarm in a tree stump the summer before, I was intrigued. I had grown up hearing stories about my great-grandfather and his bees, and my dad was retired and looking for another hobby, and beekeeping fit the bill.⁠
⁠
Despite reading all the books we could get our hands on, (some of which had been published in the 1800s) we found out beekeeping ain't easy! There are so many things that are affecting bees that didn't use to be an issue. ⁠
⁠
I still work in the beeyard with Josh and the boys, but through the years, Josh has taken over more of the beekeeping aspect of our business. We're a good team, because around the time I start to get tired of something, he starts to feel comfortable with it. 🐝

Most years, we just use a soft bristle brush to gently nudge the girls off the honey before we spin it out.⁠
⁠
Often, beekeepers will use formic acid. It's really, really stinky. Like stinky enough to make a person gag. It's bad. It's not toxic to people or bees, but it sure stinks. Beeks can put a squirt of that stuff on a felt bottomed box on top of the hive, and the bees head down into the hive to escape the stink. It's called a fume board. Generally, we try not to use it, just because that smell is so awful. Most of our hives are pretty gentle, and we can brush them off without too much trouble.⁠

Here's our head beekeeper, Josh. About 12 years ago, I (Jodie) got the idea to get some bees.⁠

We had found a wild swarm in a hollowed out tree in the front of our property. After watching them all summer, I read everything the library had on bees. (I don't even think we had internet then, maybe dial-up?) Anyway, the following spring, we decided to get a few hives, and so did my dad. His grandfather had been a beekeeper and took him along when he was a boy.⁠
⁠
Josh had talked to old beekeepers through his work with the conservation district, but was a little hesitant around the girls at first. To be totally honest, they did not like him at first. I'm not sure if it was his beard, or if they could sense his nervousness, or what, but he did end up getting stung quite a bit more than I did.⁠
⁠
Anyway, it took him a few years to warm up to the idea of beekeeping. I affectionately called him the ASSistant the first couple of years 🤣. He continued to read and learn about bees long after I had moved on to other aspects of our business, and has been in charge of the girls for quite a few years now.⁠

He's really come to enjoy being out in the beeyard and loves reading about all the breaking news in the beekeeping world.⁠
