Let's talk about pH, hormones, and the skin barrier
For many women, there comes a point where they start to notice some changes in their skin. It's drier. It gets red easily. Products they've used for years suddenly sting.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
As we move through the natural aging process, peri-menopause and menopause, our skin changes. Some changes are easy to spot, while others are happening quietly in the background. One of the behind the scenes changes is our skin's pH.
Your skin's pH plays a big part in how hydrated and resilient your skin is. When that balance shifts, you can tell, even if you don't realize that's what it is.
What is skin pH, anyway?
Your skin has a natural protective layer on the surface called the acid mantle. It's just a slightly acidic environment that helps keep your skin healthy and strong.
Healthy skin usually sits between 4.5 and 5.5. That slight acidity does some very important jobs:
Holds onto moisture
Improves the barrier function of your skin
Keeps irritation in check
Protects against dryness and sensitivity
When the pH starts to drift higher, meaning your skin is less acidic, that barrier doesn't work as well. Your skin can become drier, more reactive, and slower to recover.
These little shifts can have surprisingly dramatic effects on your skin.
What does pH have to do with Perimenopause and Menopause?
During perimenopause and menopause, estrogen levels begin to shift and decline. Estrogen helps support skin in many different ways. It plays a role in hydration, elasticity, collagen production, sebum production, and barrier function. Research has shown that as estrogen levels drop, skin pH starts climbing (meaning lower estrogen = less acidic, more basic skin pH) and sebum production slows. That combo can result in skin that feels drier and more reactive.
Which is why many women in midlife start thinking things like:
"I need richer skincare now." "My skin is suddenly so reactive." "I can't use the same products I used at 30."
Your skin is changing, and it does need a different kind of support now.
This is why we formulate the way we do.
At Bee Lovely Botanicals, we've always believed skincare should support the skin, not fight with it.
Every product we make is designed to be gentle and supportive to your skin barrier and acid mantle. We want your skin to feel calm, comfortable, and cared for, not stripped down and stinging.
Our newest cleanser was created with all of this in mind.
The Propolis and Honey Cleanser is pH-balanced to help support she skin's natural acid mantle while gently cleansing. It gives you that fresh, clean feeling without tipping into harsh or squeaky territory. For skin that's feeling dry or reactive, that can make all the difference.
Honey and propolis are amazing ingredients for this cleanser because of their moisturizing and barrier promoting properties.
A gentle cleanser or a gentle soap?
We still love our cold process soaps! They're gentle, nourishing, and many women swear by them.
Because they're true soaps, they drift slightly alkaline, usually around 7-8. Many contend that the gentleness of the soap is more important than the pH to them, and their skin is perfectly happy with that. We made the new cleanser for women that have noticed changes and prefer the feel of a pH balanced cleanser.
As skin changes with age and hormones, sometimes the best thing we can do is listen. Some women will always love a gentle bar soap. Others will find their skin feels better with a pH-balanced cleanser. Both are beautiful options. What matters most is choosing the one that helps your skin feel calm, supported, and well loved.
